Awami League lawmaker Rebecca Momin passes away

Ruling Bangladesh Awami League lawmaker from Netrokona-4 constituency Rebecca Momin died of old-age complications at Square Hospital in Dhaka in the early hours of Tuesday (Jul 11). Rebeka Momin, MP, breathed her last at about 4.30 a.m. Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in Dhaka, her personal aide Mohammad Tofail Ahmed confirmed the death. She was 76.

Rebecca, wife of former Awami League Presidium Member and ex-Food Minister Abdul Momin, left behind by her daughter, scores of well-wishers and political admirers to mourn her death.

Rebecca, who started her politics as the vice-president of Rajshahi University Chhatra League in the sixties, held various positions in the party throughout her long political career. She was a former member of the Netrakona District Awami League.

After death of her husband in 2004, she was elected as a member of parliament for the first time as a candidate of the Awami League in the ninth national parliamentary election in 2008. She was elected from that seat for three consecutive terms in 2008, 2014 and 2018.

Rebecca Momin was also the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs.

Rebecca was born on May 15 in 1947, in Mohanganj Upazila of Netrokona district.

Her first Namaz-e Janaza was held at Baitul Aman Jame Mosque in Dhanmondi road no-7 in the city at 10 a.m. Later, her body was taken to Mohonganj in Netrokona. She will be buried at her family graveyard at Kaziahati village of Mohanganj upazila of Netrakona after second Namaz-e-Janaza at 6 p.m.
