Sakkari out of French Open but Azarenka & Kerber win

French Open 2022
Dates: May 22-Jun 5
Venue: Roland Garros, Paris

Maria Sakkari became the fifth women's top-10 seed to lose in the first four days at the French Open as she was beaten by Karolina Muchova in the second round. The Greek fourth seed, a semi-finalist last year, lost 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4).

Sakkari saved seven set points in the opener but could not deny Czech opponent Muchova, 25. However, former world number ones Victoria Azarenka and Angelique Kerber advanced to the third round.

World number one Iga Swiatek is now the only top five player left in the women's draw following Sakkari's exit.

The 26-year-old Sakkari's Grand Slam breakthrough came at Roland Garros last year, where she advanced to the last four and held match point before losing to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova.

However, she struggled for consistency against former Australian Open semi-finalist Muchova, who has had an injury-hit few years.

Elsewhere, 15th seed Azarenka beat German Andrea Petkovic 6-1 7-6 (7-3), while Kerber defeated 19-year-old French player Elsa Jacquemot 6-1 7-6 (7-2).

Kerber, seeded 21st, has now won seven successive matches after clinching the Strasbourg International on Saturday.

Belarusian Azarenka reached the last 32 for the eighth time, but needed to save a set point in the second set before winning to advance to an encounter with Switzerland's Jil Teichmann, the 23rd seed.

Germany's Kerber, who has won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open, will now face world number 47 Aliaksandra Sasnovich following her 3-6 6-1 6-1 win over Britain's Emma Raducanu.

American teenager Coco Gauff, who celebrated her high school graduation in Paris last week, beat Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck 6-1 7-6 (7-4).

The 18-year-old will face Kaia Kanepi next after the Estonian beat Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-4 6-4.

Amanda Anisimova, who beat Naomi Osaka in the opening round, also advanced with a 6-4 6-1 win over Croatian qualifier Donna Vekic.

Swiss 14th seed Belinda Bencic will meet Canadian U.S. Open finalist Leylah Fernandez after beating Bianca Andreescu 6-2 6-4, while 19-year-old Fernandez prevailed 6-3 6-2 against Czech Katerina Siniakova.

But two-time Grand Slam winner Petra Kvitova, twice a French Open semi-finalist, was beaten by Australian Daria Saville 6-4 6-2.

The 32-year-old Czech has not gone beyond the third round of a Grand Slam since the 2020 U.S. Open.
