Dhaka South and North city corporations have decided to operate 18 makeshift cattle markets in the capital for trading the sacrificial animals maintaining the health guidelines from Jul 17 on the occasion of the Eid-ul-Azha.
Of the total 18 cattle markets, 10 markets will be operated in the jurisdiction of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and eight others in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) areas for the five days till Jul 21 (Eid day), according to the officials of the both city corporations.
Apart from the 18 makeshift cattle markets, the permanent cattle markets of Gabtali in DNCC and Sarulia in DSCC areas will also remain in operation during the period, they said.
Since the Ministries of Fisheries and Livestock urged the traders and customers for buying and selling sacrificial animals using the online platforms, the government has already launched marking the Eid to stem the Covid-19 infection. Both the city corporations’ officials said they would give more emphasize on online trading instead of offline marketing.
DNCC Mayor Md Atiqul Islam on Monday (Jul 13) told media that the lease holders have been instructed to operate the cattle markets following the health guidelines.
“We have taken overall preparations in this regard. A 14-member committee has been formed making 19 No Ward Counselor Md Mafizur Rahman as convener to monitor the cattle markets,” he said.
Eleven other counselors and two veterinary officers have been made members of the committee, the mayor said.
Atiqul said the lease holders will supply health protective materials including hand sanitizers and arrange thermometer for measuring body temperature.
Required number of Close Circuit cameras will be set up in the markets, he added.
The mayor said that the markets will have separate gates for entry and exit while all should maintain social distancing, and elderly and ailing people along with children will not be allowed to enter the markets.
DSCC chief estate officer all kinds of preparation have been taken to ensure maintenance of health guidelines in the cattle markets.
The lease holders have been given some extra conditions to maintain the health guidelines strictly, he said, adding that if they fail to maintain the conditions, their leases will be cancelled.
The makeshift cattle markets in the DSCC are: the open space adjacent to the Institute of Leather Technology ground in Hazaribagh area, open space surrounding the Postagola crematorium, open space surrounding the Meradia Bazar, the open space adjacent to Dholaikhal Truck Terminal, open space of Blocks- E, F, G and H and section 1 and 2 of Aftabnagar (Easter Housing), open space behind DSCC Market at Golapbagh, open spaces surrounding the Maitri Sangha Club at North Shahjahanpur Khilgaon Railgate Bazar area, open space surrounding the Donia College, open space surrounding the Dhupkhola East and Club and open space surrounding the Rahmatganj Club in Lalbagh area.
The eight makeshift cattle markets in the DNCC area are: the open space of Badda Eastern Housing (Aftabnagar) Block-E of Section-3, open spaces adjacent to Kawla Shial Danga, open space of ward no 6 Mirpur’s section-6, open spaces of Uttarkhan Mainartek Shaheed Nagar Housing (residential) Project, open spaces from Brindaban to BGMEA building in Uttara 7 no sector, Bhatara (Saidnagar) temporary cattle market, open spaces of Rajdhani Housing, Swapnadhara Housing and Basila Garden City adjacent to Basila 40-feet road in Mohammadpur and open spaces of Salam Steel Limited and Jamuna Housing Company and privately owned land adjacent to the north side of 300-feet road under the DNCC ward no 43.
