Bangladesh reports over 5,000 Covid cases for 2nd consecutive day

Bangladesh today reported over 5,000 Covid-19 cases for the second consecutive day while it recorded 45 deaths from the deadly virus, highest in around seven months. The country logged 45 virus deaths, same figure for two straight days, meaning the number of Covid-19 deaths reached 8,994, a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

During the late winter season, infection rate started decreasing sharply as the country reported 2.30 percent coronavirus positive cases on Feb 8 this year while the figure has surged significantly in recent times.

Of the total sample tests in the past 24 hours, 18.94 percent tested positive, while 13.05 percent cases were detected from the total tests conducted so far, the release added.

A total of 26,620 samples were tested at 224 authorized laboratories across the country during the time.

It said the tally of infections has surged to 6,05,937 as 5,082 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours.

The recovery count rose to 5,40,180 after another 2,162 patients were discharged from the hospitals during the period.

Among the total infections, 89.15 percent patients have recovered, while 1.48 percent died so far since the first Covid-19 positive cases were reported in the country on Mar 8, 2020.

Among the 45 deaths, 28 are male and 17 female, the press release said, adding one is below 10 years, two are in their 20s, two in their 30s, seven in their 40s, eight in their 50s while 25 are above 60 years.

According to the division-wise data, 37 deaths took place in Dhaka Division. Among the total 8,994 fatalities, 5,118 deaths occurred in Dhaka division, 1,631 in Chattogram division, 501 in Rajshahi division, 579 in Khulna division, 273 in Barishal division, 318 in Sylhet division, 373 in Rangpur division and 201 in Mymensingh division, according to the press release.

A total of 46,43,645 samples have so far been tested since the detection of the first Covid-19 cases in the country.

The DGHS said in order to make treatment facilities easily available for the Covid-19 patients, the government has introduced telemedicine services comprising 100 physicians for round the clock in the country.

It added that 2,68,66,916 people received healthcare services from hotline mobile numbers and health web portals as the government formed a group of medical professionals to provide emergency healthcare services.

As of Mar 30, 2021, 11:20 GMT, 2,806,757 people have died so far from the Covid-19 outbreak and there are currently 128,346,564 confirmed cases in 212 countries and territories, according to Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics.
