Global coronavirus cases reach 29,760,579

Global coronavirus cases surged past 29,760,579 as of Thursday (Sep 17) morning, according to the Johns Hopkins University (JHU). The university's tracker said 939,175 people have died from the virus worldwide.

The US, which is the worst affected country, has reported 6,629,357 confirmed cases with 196,752 fatalities. Besides, the data shows, India’s total caseload crossed 5,020,359 while the death toll climbed to 82,066 during the period.

Brazil is the third worst-hit country with 4,419,083 confirmed cases and 134,106 deaths.

Coronavirus cases were first reported in China in December last year. The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared it a pandemic in March this year.

There is currently no vaccine for the virus but some promising candidates are at the final stage of trials.

Situation in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s health authorities reported the deaths of 21 coronavirus patients in 24 hours till Wednesday morning, bringing the total death tally to 4,823.

According to a Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) handout, 1,615 new cases were detected during the period, taking the total cases from Covid-19 to 3,42,671.

In per one million population, 2012.08 cases are being recorded while 1456.02 are recovering and 28.32 are dying.
