BRTA recommends 80pc hike in bus fare

BRTA recommends 80pc hike in bus fare

50 percent seats of all buses would be kept vacant to maintain distancing among the passengers to tackle the infection of Coronavirus. As a result, to minimize the loss of bus owners BRTA has recommended the government to hike 80 percent bus fares after consulting with transport owners leaders.

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority is seeking to increase public transport fare by 80 percent as bus services to restart in a reduced scale from Monday (Jun 1), local media reported.

The transport authority's fare fixation committee made the recommendation to offset the losses facing operators as each bus will only be allowed to fill half its seating capacity to meet social distancing requirements.

After more than two months under lockdown, the government decided to lift the ban on the public transit system, allowing operators to carry a limited number of passengers from Jun 1.
