Five more infected in Bangladesh; testing services being extended

Five new coronavirus (COVID-19) positive cases have been detected raising the total number to 44 while no death has been reported in the last 24 hours, according to Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR). Among the total coronavirus positive cases, 11 patients have recovered so far. Health conditions of other infected people are stable. Since the confirmation of coronavirus positive cases in the country, five people died.

Five more people tested positive with coronavirus (Covid-19) in Bangladesh, taking the number of the confirmed cases to 44, according to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR).

All the infected are male, said Prof Dr. Meerjady Sabrina Flora, director of IEDCR at a briefing in Dhaka on Thursday (Mar 26).

Of the five new confirmed cases, the age of two people is between 30 and 40 while two others 41 and 50 and the rest is 60.

Of the five patients, three have contracted with another patient while another came from abroad, Flora said, adding that the contract history of the other person could not be known.

11 people of out 44, who tested positive, were released from hospitals and five died from the virus, she said.

Now 28 people are taking treatment at different hospitals, the IEDCR director added.

She also said testing services are being extended.

"Now coronavirus tests will be done at Jonoshastho Institute, Dhaka Shishu Hospital and Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases in Chattogram," she said, adding that more institutions in divisional level will be added to the list soon.

The IEDCR director said that they have also extended their sample collection system. Earlier, only IEDCR team used to collect the samples but from now on, staff of the respective hospitals will collect the samples and sent those to IEDCR for test.

Prof Flora urged the people, who went to their village homes from Dhaka, to follow home quarantine for containing the spread of the deadly virus.

In Dhaka, the diagnosis facility is expanding to Gonoshasthaya Kendra, Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital, Dhaka Medical College and Hospital and Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital, she added.

The diagnosis facility will also be expanded to different medical colleges at the divisional level like Mymensingh Medical College, Rangpur Medical College, Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, Khulna Medical College and Barisal Medical College.

“So far, we have tested samples of 920 persons, of which 126 were tested in the last 24 hours. A total of 47 people have been kept in isolation, while 47 more are kept in institutional quarantine,” Prof Flora said.

She urged to call only the two numbers — 01944333222, 10655 – which will connect the other toll free numbers.

“We have to avoid going outside, most importantly wherever there is a chance of coming in contact with unknown people,” she further said.
