President, PM pay rich tributes to Madhusudan

President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday (Jan 21) paid rich tributes to the memory of Michael Madhusudan Dutt on the occasion of ‘Madhu Mela 2020’ to be held in Sagordari, Jashore marking the 196th birth anniversary of the great poet of Bangla literature.

The President and the PM in separate messages recalled Madhusudan’s contributions to the Bangla literature and wished success of ‘Madhu Mela 2020’, local media reported.

“The unique quality of the literary works of legendary poet Madhusudan Dutt has enriched Bangla literature a lot,” said President Hamid in his message.

The poet earned name and fame in the arena of literature for his extraordinary works, he said, adding that Madhusudan Dutt is one of the legendary pioneering personalities in resurgence of Bangla literature.

“Madhusudan Dutt emerged as first Bangla epic-poet in modern Bangla literature and he was a pioneer of Bengali drama and sonnet,” said the President.

In her message Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, “The literary work of Madhusudan, who introduced sonnet in the Bangla literature is a great asset for our country and language.”

“Madhusudan Dutt is a bright star in the Bangla literature . . . his literary works, especially the dramas, poets and sonnet, enriched the Bangladesh literature,” she said.

Michael Madhusudan Dutt was born at Sagardari under Keshabpur upazila in Jashore on Jan 25, 1824. He was born to the land lord Raj Narayan Dutt and Janhabi Devi.

He died at Kolkata General Hospital on Jun 29, 1873. He was buried at Park Street, Kolkata, India.

He is specially known for the famous epic 'Meghnadbadh Kabbo’ (1861), which is a tragic epic and is exceptional in Bangla literature both in terms of style and content.
