Bangladesh Election Commission on Monday (May 12) suspended the registration of Bangladesh Awami League. Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed it to the reporters after a meeting of the EC. The decision was taken in continuation of the notification issued by the Home Ministry, he said. A gazette notification issued on Monday in this regard, local media reported.
The EC Secretary said, "The Ministry of Home Affairs has banned the activities of Awami League and all its front, associate and brotherly organizations. In continuation of this, the Election Commission has decided to suspend the registration of Awami League".
The Home Ministry published a gazette on Monday banning all activities of the party.
The meeting of the commission was held around 5.30 p.m. with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin in the chair.
