Benfica pip Porto to Portuguese title

Benfica pip Porto to Portuguese title

Benfica won its first Portuguese league title in four years after beating Santa Clara 3-0 on Saturday (May 27) on the final day of the season. FC Porto finished two points behind in second after beating Guimaraes 3-0. Last year’s champion needed last-place Santa Clara to pull off a surprising win at Benfica to have a realistic shot at defending its title. It was Benfica’s record-extending 38th league title and its first since 2019. Since Benfica’s last title, Porto had won it twice and Sporting once.

Benfica won the Portuguese Primeira Liga title for the first time since 2018-19 thanks to a 3-0 win over Santa Clara on the final day.

Defeat would have opened the door for Porto but goals from Goncalo Ramos, Rafa Silva and Alex Grimaldo got Roger Schmidt's side over the line.

It is a Portuguese record 38th title.

Benfica finish the season with only four defeats in all competitions, with three of them coming in the space of nine days in April.

Santa Clara had already been relegated.
