Muhith hints at withdrawing VAT on private versities

Students of private universities will not have to pay 4.5 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) imposed on them by the authorities.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith stated this at a receptionhosted by Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad at Dhaka Club Wednesday night.

Muhith said a decision to this effect would be given within a week.

Elaborating on the issue, the finance minister said, "We have imposed the VAT on the university authorities who later imposed this on the students".

"If necessary, we will consider the whole aspect of the 4.5 percent VAT for the private university students," said Muhith.

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Agriculture Minister Begum Motia Chowdhury, Education Minister Nurul Islam Naheed and Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni were present on the occasion.

Secretaries, editors and senior journalists also attended the reception.
