Razer Unveils New Headset and Wireless Mouse

Razer's new standard headset has promising specs, but we'll reserve judgement for a full ears-on evaluation.

Razer, the company that invented the gaming mouse so many years ago, has unveiled two new gaming peripherals at the Consumer Electronics Show.

The first, the Wireless Mamba Gaming Mouse, seeks to eliminate one of the frustrations of gamers using wireless mice. Most wireless mice have a bit of a delay between the mouse movement and your PC receiving and processing the wireless signal. This somewhat sluggish behavior isn't very noticeable when navigating your desktop, but gamers find it a hindrance in fast action games. The new Mamba promises a 1ms response time in wireless mode.

Razer's new wireless and wired gaming mouse promises to eliminate the lag normally associated with wireless mice.

Wireless mode? Yes, the Mamba Wireless Gaming Mouse can be plugged in for standard wired play with an "ultrapolling" rate of 1,000 Hz, similar to other Razer gaming mice.

The exorbitantly high DPI of gaming mice is present as well, with settings up to 5,600 dpi. Razer promises 14 hours of continuous gaming on a single charge, or up to 72 hours of "typical gaming".

In addition to the wireless gaming mouse, Razer is expanding its ever-growing new audio line with a new headset, the Carcharias. This circumarual (over-the-ear) headset will try to provide the right fit with replaceable ear pads and a fully adjustable headband. All the other usual specs are there: 20 to 20,000-Hz response range, an impedance of 32 at 1KHz, 3 meter braided cable, etc.

Of course, we have seen promising specs on plenty of headsets - the final sound quality and comfort of the headphones and mic are not easily quantified in numbers. The Carcharias uses standard 3.5mm plugs for the headphones and mic; it's not a USB headset. We'll have a full review as soon as the product is available to more fully assess if this $80 headset is worth the price.
