World's best hold no fears for Saqib Al Hasan

He's only been playing cricket for six years and yet he's relishing facing the fastest bowlers on the planet and bowling leg spinners to the best batsmen.

Saqib Al Hasan sprang to prominence in the World Cup when he played a crucial part in the Group stage match victory over India a week before his 20th birthday, scoring 53 and returning bowling figures of 0-44 from 10 overs.

He has made useful contributions of 25 both times against New Zealand and Australia in the Super 8 defeats, with his left-arm spin proving expensive.

"I'm quite confident. I'm not interested in targeting other players but I want to play my own game," said Saqib, who bats at number five and provides an anchoring role in the middle order, despite his tender years.

Saqib, like much of Bangladesh, is relatively new to cricket. He only took up the sport seriously at the age of 14, when he saw the national team win the ICC Trophy, which launched it into full international status.

Before that, his cricket consisted of improvising with tennis balls at school, while his cousin plays soccer for the national team and his father was a serious soccer player in the Bangladesh domestic league.

The youngster says he has been learning in the Caribbean, facing the likes of Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Bond and Glenn McGrath.

"It's a big test of your technique and your mental toughness," he said at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence, where his team found some dry nets after two days of torrential rain.

The first cricket Saqib watched was the 1999 World Cup in England on television. Many of the players who featured then are still playing in this tournament.

Bangladesh's shock victory over India, combined with a win over Bermuda, took the

team to the Super 8s stage for the first time, a major achievement for such a young cricket nation.

The team is finding it tough, but coach Dav Whatmore is determined the team will avoid bottom place by beating Ireland and attempting a shock result over one of the bigger nations.
