India series is not going to be an easy one: Bashar

Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar expressed his ambitious target to play in the World Cup ‘Super Eight’ round. At that time only a few took him seriously. But later on Basher’s team achived their target reaching the ‘Super Eight’ stage. Bashar is now going through a lean-patch and so is facing criticism for his poor show in the World Cup. The most successful Bangladesh captain faced the media on his return from West Indies.

Q: What is your assessment about Bangladesh’s performance in the World Cup?

Bashar: We did not play that bad. Though we secured a Super Eight place, we failed to keep up our success. Especially our batting was not up to the mark except for one or two matches. But definitely our bowlers succeeded in doing something that our batsmen failed to match. Overall, I am not hundred percent satisfied. We could do even better.

Q: Bangladesh defeated India and South Africa and also New Zealand in the warm up match. Still this team is not being considered as a good team, why?

Bashar: This is simply because we are not being able to play with consistency. But this is also true that we are progressing. And I think we are on the right track.

Q: What was the biggest achievement for Bangladesh in this world cup?

Bashar: To gain respect from the stronger opponents; the fact that nobody undermines us anymore. So far strong teams defeated us before even facing us on the field. But now they have to wait for their victory until the last ball of the match.

Q: Will you say that over expectation from the team was responsible for loosing to Ireland?

Bashar: It might be so. In fact we all we were sure of our success in that match; but unfortunately our calculation did not work on that day. No doubt, Ireland really played well. We however found it awful to taste failure at such a crucial stage of the World Cup.

Q: Do you still regret for the match with England?

Bashar: Isn’t it obvious? We remained only a few runs away from victory. But we also prove d that we are capable of beating any team.

Q: Your present coach is resigning. You are now in search of a new coach. What are you thinking in this regard?

Bashar: To be or not to be with the team, it is Whatmore’s personal decision. But we will miss him dearly. It is board’s duty to find us a new coach. Whoever comes in, it won’t be a problem.

Q: What are your plans for the upcoming series against India, the team that you had knocked out of the World Cup?

Bashar: Though we won over India, the series will not be an easy contest; especially when it is a test series.

Q: What is so special about a test series?

Bashar: We are playing test after long 16 months. Within this period we did not play any single 4-day match. Not only for Bangladesh but for any country 16 month is a long time. However there are good reasons now to expect from the ODIs.

Q: You are back home after 2 months. Have you any plan for series preparations against India?

Bashar: After we finished our World Cup in West Indies, we kept on practicing for the remaining three days. Now we all should take rest for a week. Then from May 2 we will be back to full fledged practice.

Q: What kind of a team you are expecting to be picked against India?

Bashar: I hope our present line-up will not change that much.

Q: While in West Indies, you said that you would consider your one-day career.

Bashar: I have just arrived. Let me have a break and then I will decide. But whatever I decide, I'll do it before the series against India.
