Hosts trounce SA Academy

GP-BCB Academy team confirmed their final berth in the Grameenphone Academy Cup as they beat South Africa Academy team by 119 runs in a return league match at the Bir Shreshtha Shaheed Ruhul Amin Stadium (BSSRAS) in Chittagong Saturday.

Earlier, in the tournament opener on Tuesday, the hosts also notched a 75-run win over the Proteas Academy side.

In the day’s match, coin-favoured GP-BCB Academy team batted first to post 246 for 4 in the stipulated 50 overs.

Skipper cum left-hand batsman Mehrab Hossain Jr. contributed unbeaten 89 runs, while Nasir scored not out 54 to guide the home side to a fighting total. Mehrab Jr was later adjudged man of the match.

After the dismissal of three top order batsmen -- Nazmus Sadat 5, Imrul Kayes 19 and Farhad Hossain 21 -- for just 64 on the scoreboard, number four Mushfiqur Rahim along with skipper Mehrab Jr put up 58 runs in the 4th wicket before Mushfiqur returned to the pavilion scoring 35 runs off 45 balls with three fours and a six.

Then Nasir along with Mehrab Jr added another valuable 124 runs in the 5th wicket partnership, taking the hosts near the 150-mark.

CJ de Villiers grabbed two wickets for 63 runs, while Mondli Mahlombe took the other wicket for 35 runs.

In reply, South Africa Academy team was bundled out for 127 runs in 44.1 overs. Number six Matthew Arnold scored 25 runs off 63 balls, while Abdul Aziz Temoor made 21, CJ de Villiers 15 and Shadle van Schalkwyk 14.

Delwar Hossain, Nasir Hossain and Suhrawardi Shuvo took two wickets each.

Meanwhile, the South Africa Academy team meets Pakistan Academy team on Sunday, while GP-BCB Academy team play Pakistan Academy team in the last return league match on Monday, all at the BSSRAS.

After the league basis matches at the BSSRAS, the two top teams will meet in the final on April 23 at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium (SBNS).

On completion of the one-day meet, the Pakistan side will play two four-day matches against their Bangladesh counterparts - the first on Apr 26-29 at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium (SCS) in Bogra and the 2nd on May 2-5, also at the same venue.

GP BCB Academy - 246/4 in 50 overs; Mehrab Jr 89*, Nasir 60*, CJ de Villiers 2/63.

SA ACADEMY - 127/10 in 42 overs; Arnold 25, CJ de Villiers 15, Delwar 2/15, Nasir 2/25.
