Gazipur City polls on Jun 26

Gazipur City polls on Jun 26

Bangladesh Election Commission has announced that the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) elections will be held on Jun 26. Election Commission secretary Helaluddin Ahmed made the announcement on Sunday (May 13), local media reports said.

Candidates can run their election campaigns starting from Jun 18 to Jun 24 midnight. No campaigns will be allowed before Jun 18.

Earlier, the apex court ordered to hold the GCC election by Jun 28 scrapping a High Court order that stayed the polls for three months. After Supreme Court cleared the way, the Commission held a meeting on Sunday and came up with the new schedule.

The GCC election was scheduled to be held on May 15. But the High Court stayed the election following a writ regarding demarcation of the poll areas.

Later Bangladesh Nationalist Party and ruling Bangladesh Awami League mayoral candidates and also the Election Commission filed petition with the Supreme Court challenging the HC order.
