High Court stays Gazipur city polls

High Court stays Gazipur city polls

The High Court on Sunday (May 6) stayed the polls of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) that was scheduled to be held on May 15. An HC bench of Justices Naima Haidar and Zafar Ahmed passed the order following a writ petition filed in this regard, local media reports said.

The stay order comes more than a month after Bangladesh Election Commission announced the city polls schedule on Mar 31.

In the last GCC polls in 2013, Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed candidate M A Mannan had defeated his Bangladesh Awami League counterpart Azmat Ullah Khan.

On Jan 17, the same HC bench stayed the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral by-polls for six months, which was scheduled for Feb 26.

The by-polls schedule was announced after the sudden death of Mayor Annisul Huq.
