Half of the population uses internet

Some 3.17 lakh new subscribers started using internet in December last pushing the total internet users of the country to 8.04 crore, according to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). The new statistics revealed by the regulator on Monday (Jan 29) showed that over half of the population is now using internet while mobile phone users are almost near cent percent.

The mobile phone users in December last year stood at 14.51 crore which was 14.31 crore in November. Most of the subscribers use mobile internet and the number was 7.50 crore while WiMAX subscribers was 89,000 and 53.44 lakh subscribers use ISP and PSTN internet.

In November last year, the country witnessed the 8 crore landmark of internet subscribers followed by 7 crore in April. Of the total mobile phone subscribers, market leader GrammenPhone is on the top with 6.53 crore subscribers followed by Robi with 4.29 subscribers, Banglalink 3.23 crore subscribers and state-own Teletalk 44.94 lakh subscribers.

The country registered the milestone of 14 crore mobile phone users in November last years.
